8. About the examples

"stereo_beep.arts" is a small example which outputs a 440 Hz sine wave on one your left speaker, a 880 Hz sine wave on the right.

All others are midi synthesis examples. Fortunately they are quite conventient to use these days...:

You can use them in conjunction with midisend like that

• start artsbuilder
• choose File/Retrieve from server
• choose either example_instrument_fx or example_instrument_pure: example_instrument_fx has an additional echo effect.
• go to File/Execute Module
• choose add and add an instrument on some midi channel
• it is now executing and will synthesize the events that come over the midi bus, so lets create some ;)
• start midisend in a shell window
• you should be able to play on your keyboard now (optionally, use cantor as midi source, see cantor section)
• you may switch instruments on the fly with the instrument mapper

You should be careful with the number of maximum voices allowed at the instrument mapper in the main structure. Perhaps your computer can calculate more voices than the default (eight) with some instruments, perhaps even eight are too much... look at the cpu usage to see how your computer is doing.
